Bladder Cancer

Know More About Bladder Cancer

The urinary bladder is an important organ of the human body that is responsible for storing the urine till it is discharged. The inner lining of the bladder is formed by urothelial cells that are often found in ureters and kidneys as well. Bladder cancer starts when the urothelial cells start dividing uncontrollably. The unwanted proliferation leads to cancerous situations and causes health issues for the patients. Generally, first-stage cancers are treated most of the time but they also have the chances of recurrence.

What are the causes?

Generally, the mutations occurring in the DNA are responsible for the quick multiplication of the cells. The abnormal growth of the cells enhances tumor formation and begins destroying normal body cells and tissues. There are several other factors that affect the formation of cancerous cells and lead to the development of difficult situations. Some of them are:

  • SmokingPeople who smoke cigars, cigarettes, or pipes may lead to increasing the risk of bladder cancer through an accumulation of chemicals in the urine. These are responsible for damaging the lining of the bladder.
  • AgeWith the increasing age, people are usually diagnosed with this issue. Also, men are more likely to develop bladder cancer than females.
  • Chronic Bladder InflammationIf an individual is suffering from repeated chronic urinary infections or health issues like cystitis is responsible for the development of a cancerous issue as well.
  • Family HistoryFamily history matters a lot because if any blood relatives like siblings, a parent has the genes, that can be inherited by a child as well. This history is necessary to be known by the doctor so that the treatment is done accordingly.
  • Exposure to the chemicalsExposure to chemicals used in the manufacturing of dyes, leather, textile, rubber, or chemicals like arsenic increases the chances of bladder cancer. These may travel down the bladder through the bloodstream.

Types of bladder cancer?

The human urinary bladder is composed of various cells that might become cancerous in nature and therefore, lead to the formation of a lump or mass. Bladder cancer has been classified as follows:

Urothelial carcinoma

It is also called transitional cell carcinoma and takes place in the cells that line the bladder internally. When the bladder is full, the urothelial cells expand and as it gets empty, they contract. It is usually the common cause of cancer among people.

The bladder contains some glands that are responsible for the secretion of mucus. These glands are made up of some cells that when proliferate lead to the condition of Adenocarcinoma. This type of occurrence is, however, quite rare.

The bladder cancer is also divided into two types on the basis of the appearance of the cells under a microscope. These are:

Low-grade bladder cancer

In this case, the cancer cells appear something similar to the normal body cells in terms of organization and appearance. Such cells are less likely to destroy the muscular walls and destroy body cells. This type of cancer grows slowly.

High-grade bladder cancer

Here, the cells are abnormally organized and have a distorted appearance. These cells are more aggressive in nature and grow rapidly. These cancer cells affect the muscular wall surrounding the bladder along with adjacent tissues and organs.

Signs and Symptoms

Bladder cancer can be detected if you are experiencing these issues.

  • Sometimes, the blood may appear in the urine which makes it appear bright red. It may not be visible sometimes and is then detected through laboratory tests.
  • The patient may experiences painful or frequent urination along with back pain.
  • The need to urinate multiple times may also arise but one may not be able to.
  • Blood clots in the urine are also a possibility.

The diagnosis of bladder cancer is done through various methods. On experiencing any unusual symptoms, one must visit the doctor and get checked.
Some of the major diagnosing ways are:

During this procedure, the cystoscope is inserted through the urethra and has a lens attached to it. It helps to examine and identify the issues that are present.

During the cystoscopy, along with a lens, the doctor may also insert some special tools with its help that will help in collecting the cell sample. This procedure has been termed biopsy or transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT).

Urine Cytology

The patient’s urine sample is collected which is then analyzed for the presence of cancer cells under the microscope.

Imaging tests and procedures

To get a clear view of the urinary tract, the doctor may perform certain tests like retrograde pyelogram or computerized tomography. The X-Ray provides a detailed view of the urinary tract and the urogram also helps to identify the affected areas.

If the presence of cancer cells is detected in the urinary tract, the healthcare professionals might conduct other imaging tests to see if the disease has spread to other locations(lymph nodes) or not. These may include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), CT Scan, Chest X-Ray, and bone scan.

Possible side effects

  • Usually, these treatments can provide minor to major side effects on a patient’s body. These include issues like nausea, vomiting, hair loss, diarrhea, and certain skin changes.
  • The radiation therapy can lead to blistering, irritation, and peeling. Rashes, loss of appetite, and fever are also some common after-effects.
  • After targeted therapy, the patient might experience mouth sores, dry mouth, fluctuation in mineral levels, changes in liver and kidney functioning, and loss of appetite.

Available Treatments

The treatments that are available for handling retinoblastoma are:

Chemotherapy is among one the common treatment for treating cancer. The chemo drugs can be given in three ways. They can be injected and travel throughout the body to kill cancer cells, or intra-arterial chemotherapy can be performed where drugs are delivered directly into the tumor. Intravitreal chemotherapy involves injecting chemicals directly into the eye.

Radiation Therapy

Radiotherapy uses strong beams of light, protons, or X-rays to target the tumor cells and destroy them. In plaque radiotherapy, a small-sized disk containing radioactive elements is fixed placed, and it transmits radiation to the tumor gradually. External beam radiation focuses on tumors from outside the body through machines.

It involves freezing the tumor cells to an extreme temperature that leads to their destruction. Liquid nitrogen can be used for the process.

Surgical Procedures

The doctor could perform eye removal called enucleation. An eye implant could also be made by the doctor where immediately after removing the eye socket, a special eyeball is placed. An artificial eye can also be made to deal with the situation.
